As I have begun to transition my wardrobe to feature more intentional pieces and less “trendy” items, I have taken note from the French and their way of mastering the chic, yet effortless look. Many of their “IT” girls have a way of looking sophisticated, without looking too “extra.” They admire classic prints, fabrics, and usually stick to a neutral color palette. The French know exactly how to balance a classic style while still making it look fashion forward.

Even if you have a job where you must dress very professional, it does not mean that you are not allowed to show any reflection of your personal style! I have found the best way to marry the idea of professionalism and fashion is to pick 1-2 “trends” per outfit. French girls never mix and match several trends into one ensemble. They pick a classic piece (like a tuxedo dress) and pair it with some fun, yet sleek accessories.  Also, if you have an EXTREMELY professional job, try to stick to trends that have primary or neutral colors. It is rare to find French women to wear extremely bold and bright patterns, especially to work.

But what are the elements that make a professional outfit for work really feel French?

1. Simplicity

It is a known fact that French girls never try too hard. They always seem effortlessly put together and chic. Go for simple combinations and avoid too many trendy statement pieces.

2. Neutral Color Schemes

In almost every “capsule” wardrobe, you will find a few references to French staples that always include color schemes of black, beige, and white. You are of course not limited to those colors. But muted colors will allow you to mix and match your wardrobe more easily for work.

3. Luxurious Fabrics

What I believe to be the biggest difference maker in a boring to chic outfit is the fabric choice. A simple and neutral outfit can become sophisticated by choosing sleek fabrics that instantly elevate a look.

What is your dress code for work? How do you try to work with the environment expectations, while still showing your personal flare?
