Houndstooth is NOT a trend. There is a big difference between things that are “trending” or “on trend” at the moment and a fashion item that is A TREND. Let me explain. A fashion trend is a look, clothing item, or clothing detail that is particularly fashionable at the moment because of a designer, influencer, celebrity, movie etc. It entails something that is not “timeless.” And it is usually fleeting, often faster than we can even catch on. For example, the biker short trend or millions of other fleeting and “fashion forward” looks.
Now, I have no problem with trends. And I have even done series on the blog before, showcasing the latest ones for the given season. And I do think it can be super fun to experiment with your look and try new things. I think a great way to keep your wardrobe fresh is to mix timeless items with other pieces that are particularly trendy. This makes it look like you are more fashionable, but you are not wasting money on ONLY trendy pieces. Because when it comes to INVESTING in your wardrobe, trends should be OUT.
Houndstooth has been particularly “on trend” this season. But the print itself is definitely not a trend. We have seen this iconic print for decades, which makes it timeless. The difference with houndstooth being “on trend” and not “a trend” is that the print has been featured on the runway of fashion week and was particularly favored among designers this season. Whenever a print comes to the catwalk, it usually hits retailers in a big way. So yes, this season it is EVERYWHERE, which makes it “on trend.” But this iconic print will not be here one day and gone the next such as the biker short look. Which makes houndstooth timeless in itself and not a fleeting trend.
