Single, dating, or married, pretty much everyone either chooses or is forced to (sorry guys) watch a chic flick or romance movie this time of year. As women, we are already prone to those nights of binge watching romance movies eating tubs of ice cream without control. Then add a romantic holiday on top of that… forget about!
But the truth is sometimes we are just so “over” those films that we have seen a million times. Although The Notebook is still my favorite movie [yes, I am that girl!], it’s nice to break away from our movie rut and watch something a little outside of our comfort zones!
Movies like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Maid in Manhattan are of course classics! But honestly, we have totally been there and done that! So I pulled together 15 romance movies that are totally underrated but still so great to watch! The best part about this list is that my husband actually introduced me to about half of these flicks! So grab your guy and get the Netflix rolling!
1. View from the Top
Gwyneth Paltrow is so totally hot in this! I have no idea why some people don’t like this movie! Its so much fun! Trying to make it as a first class international flight attendant, Gwyneth will do whatever it takes to be successful. But will love help her achieve her dreams or hold her down?
2. Just Married
Such a dynamic duo! Aston Kutcher and Brittany Murphy are just married and begin their adventure as newly weds across Europe for their honeymoon. But it’s the last thing from happily ever after! Such a hilarious movie!
3. The Sweetest Thing
This is the perfect movie to watch with your girls. There is a song in here that literally makes me pee my pants! After meeting Peter in a club one night, Christina Walters (Cameron Diaz) decides to go on a road trip with her friend (Christina Applegate) to find him and make him hers!
4. She’s Out of My League 
This is often thought of as a “guy movie,” but I totally loved it. An unlikely pair Kirk (Jay Baruchel) and Molly (Alice Eve) try to make a relationship work even though “she is totally out of his league.”
5. Burlesque
Just a warning: After watching this movie, you may find yourself dancing about your house in your bra and underwear pretending you are a show girl! Christina Aguilera heads to Los Angeles to follow her dreams and become a dancer. After stepping up to the plate in a show one night, she finds herself the new “IT” girl.
6.Shallow Hal
Hal (Jack Black) is used to dating women only based on physical appearance. After running into a self-help couch in an elevator, he can now only see women for the beauty they have on the inside. Absolutely hilarious and romantic all at the same time!
7. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
After being completely heart broken by ex-girlfriend (Kristen bell), Peter Bretter (Jason Segel) heads to Hawaii to forget his troubles. And who does he run into? I bet you can guess!
8. Ever After
This classic Cinderella story with Drew Barrymore is a must watch! I have probably seen this movie close to 30 times! Definitely was a childhood favorite.
9. A League of Their Own
My husband and I just watched this a couple of weeks ago. During WWII, the women form a baseball league while the men are fighting in war. The story surrounds two sisters who join the women’s league coached by Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks). This story encompasses girl power, teamwork, sisterly love, and of course Tom Hanks!
10. Overboard
You better have seen this movie. And if you haven’t. Stop what you are doing and put it on! In this classic movie, Golden Hawn falls overboard and suffers from amnesia. Edward Herrmann takes her into his home and tricks her into becoming the wife and mother of his children and keeps her true identity to himself.
11. The Lake House
This movie has both mystery and romance! Now that is my kind of movie! Sandra Bullock falls in love with a former resident of the lake house and they being to communicate through letters. But is the timing off for their romance to develop?
12. Sabrina
Sabrina Fairchild (Julia Ormond) is a chauffeur’s daughter who grew up watching the glamorous lives of the Larrabee family. Hopelessly in love with the younger son,David (Greg Kinnear) she decides to leave for Paris to find herself. Upon return, her changed appearance gains the attention of the older brother brother Linus (Harrison Ford). Love triangle? You’ll have to watch to find out!
13. Sense and Sensibility
Everyone has seen Pride and Prejudice, and yes we all know and love it. But I absolutely loved Sense and Sensibility as a child, and feel that it is often over shadowed and not given enough credit! It has a similar feel but a very different story line. It’s been a while since I have seen it, so I just might watch it again soon!
14. Ghost
Oh gosh is this a classic. Okay so it probably isn’t underrated, but I feel like my generation has forgotten about it! Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore are a madly in love couple until their relationship abruptly ends due to the murder of Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze). He returns as a spirit to protect Molly (Demi Moore) and bring justice to a business partner who has betrayed him.
15. Meet Joe Black
Another win for the hubby! He introduced this movie to me while we were still dating. Brad Pitt plays the role of Death in this movie. He is given a chance to experience life as a human for a few days, and of course falls in love in the process.
I don’t know about you, but after writing this post I am ready to sit back and watch one of these movies myself! Which one will you be watching this Valentine’s Day?
