Who watched the Lizzie McGuire movie as a kid? I remember when I saw it for the first time. I was at a sleepover with a girl that I didn’t really know all that well. I was familiar with the show and watched it often, but had not had the opportunity to see the movie in theaters. She happened to have gotten her hands on the DVD when it came out, and watching it was on the agenda for the night. That night I really did feel magical. I was in awe. The What Dreams Are Made Of song was my new anthem right along side so many of us girls. That song still gives me the feels to this day.
If you saw the movie, you will probably remember a line that was said at the very beginning of the film at Lizzie McGuire’s high school graduation. Kate Sanders calls Lizzie an outfit repeater for wearing the same blue dress she had wore to the school dance. “Lizzie McGuire, you are an outfit repeater!” This phrase quickly become iconic and has been used regularly over 15 years later. The interesting this is that I think many of us hung onto that line and held it as a standard that repeating your outfit was a bad thing!
Online shopping and trends have us grabbing the hottest new items left and right. We often feel like we always have to wear something “new” and that we shouldn’t be caught wearing the same thing twice. But I encourage you to approach your wardrobe in a completely different light. Your wardrobe should be a collection of pieces that you love and bring you joy. But also take you through those many life events with ease and personality. We should in fact be wearing some items in our closet over and over. This tells us that what we have invested our money into is serving us well!
As I have gotten older, I have found myself looking for pieces that I CAN wear again. For example, I wore this Rhode blouse (alternative here) three different times this week. I styled it for work one day, hosting a dinner at home for guests another day, and then blog pictures yesterday. And each time I wore it, I felt excited to prance about in it! Our clothing should make us feel that way! So my friend, don’t be afraid of being an outfit repeater. Afterall, as Lizzie say that being an outfit rememberer is far more pathetic!
Be an outfit repeater this week. You might just love it!
