Tiered floral midi dress, wedding guest dress, what to wear to a tropical wedding #tropicalwedding #weddingguest

Summers are filled with all types of occasions, but weddings seem to always be on the agenda. We are often scrambling to find out what to wear last minute, frantically spending hours online shopping or hitting almost every retailer in our local mall. And then comes the questions. “Can I wear this color?” or “Will I be underdressed?” And “Does this even go with the venue?” The list could go on and on. I often have been ask a few questions in real life on wedding attire etiquette. I actually broke down what to wear to each type of wedding according to the dress code in my Wedding Guest Attire Etiquette post that can read for more information.

Today I wanted to answer a few general questions that may come up if you are looking to find that perfect item to wear to your next summer wedding.

“Can I wear a dress that is cream but has pattern on it? Does it count if it isn’t all white? Or is that still pushing it?”

I say it really isn’t worth it. It is a big no no to wear white on the bride’s wedding day. And although cream is technically not white, I still think that it isn’t a smart color choice. Many wedding dresses are ivory nowadays, so that last thing you want is a nasty double take from the bride on her special day.

“How do I stand out without looking like I tried too hard?”

Details are what make a dress really stand out against the crowd. You don’t have to go for a bright and bold color choice for that “wow” factor. Look for unique and fun details like ruffles, tiers, sequins, lace, eyelet, etc. These touches can take your dress from basic to beautiful in an instant. I love how the tiered levels take a typical floral dress up to the next level without being too “extra.”

“Do I absolutely have to wear a dress?”

Believe it or not, I have had this question asked to me several times in real life. And I honestly think it is perfectly fine to reflect your personal style at such an event. So if you are not a girly girl, you do not HAVE to wear a dress. There are some beautifully made pant suits that can look extremely elegant and chic. Opt for one with a stunning fabric like silk or linen (for an outdoor wedding) to make it appear dressy and classy.

“It is an outdoor wedding, so do I have to wear heels?”

The safest shoe choice is a wedge or dressy sandal. Wedges can give you that extra height if you need that for the dress you are wearing. They are also pretty comfortable and easier to walk in compare to normal heels. You want the shoe to fit the overall dressiness of the outfit. So going for a super casual shoe (like a slide) may make the dress or suit seem out of balance. But be sure to read the invitation. If it is a beach wedding, sandals and sundress may be fine if the attire says “casual.”
