How to Store and Organize Your Accessories

As women, we have a tendency to hoard clothing and accessories. For example, those sorority t shirts you still have piled in your drawers because they remind you of the “good ole days.” Sound familiar? Shoes, necklaces, or handbags can quickly take over and cause some serious clutter. On the other side, we have all seen those overly glamorous walk in closets that are the size of entire apartments on Pinterest that might have you drooling all over your laptop. And as much as we would love to have hundreds of accessories perfectly compact and organized, it is probably not realistic for many of us. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have a beautiful display of pretty things that make us happy when we wake up and get ready in the morning.

I think the main keys in organization is practicality and ascetically pleasing. You must have both in order to accomplish a clean and clutter free space. Here are a few ways that I think you can achieve both when you go to organize and store your accessories.

1. Access What Needs to Be Stored

Start with compiling all of the items you want to have displayed. Whether it be bags, shoes, jewelry, or perfumes, you will want to see everything at once in order to get a true sense of your next step.

2. Gather Trays, Boxes, or Compartments

Now that you know what you need to store, it is time to find a few trinkets that can make organizing them more fashionable. Look around your house for old shopping bags, trays, dishes, books, and boxes that can be used to practically store your items while adding a unique display factor.

3. Store Accessories Inside Your Accessories

To maximize space, it is a great idea to use handbags, old shopping bags, or boxes as items to hide other accessories. Handbags are perfect for stuffing scarves into and an added bonus is that it helps maintain the handbags shape!

4. Arrange. Then Arrange Again.

Too often we are afraid of messing something up. We have this desire to get things perfectly right the first time around. This is not that time. Get creatative and have fun maneuvering your accessories around until you are happy with the way they look. Then ask yourself if it is truly practical for your everyday life. Is putting the heels that you wear every single day to work on the bottom shelf the best idea? Maybe it would make your life easier to keep them higher up so you don’t have to bend down as often. Pretend like you were walking into your closet on a typical morning. Will this set up make your life easier or more difficult? I think you can guess what the goal outcome is!

5. Add Something Just for Fun!

Things don’t have to be practical all the time! Pick out a few pieces of art or a fun saying to add a pop of color to your space. Choose an item that will make you feel happier when you are looking at your newly organized area.

The biggest thing to keep in mind is to have fun and don’t take it too seriously. The point in organizing an area is to make your life a little less stressful. So don’t let the process of it all make you feel frustrated or overwhelmed. Take a breath and enjoy. The worst case scenario is that you can just rearrange it again at a later time!
