How to Pack Your Makeup Products

Henri Bendal Box

Let’s start off with a story. As a lot of you know, I went to school to become a makeup artist after college, and I did end up doing some freelance work on brides, proms, and the like. If you are a makeup artist, you know the excitement that comes with starting and building your professional kit. I loved stocking up my kit with all kinds of goodies and had to have a huge makeup case so that I could travel and do makeup on my clients. The problem was that I got into the habit of traveling with an OBNOXIOUS amount of makeup for all my trips.

We are talking about one of those tiered makeup cases that could house a ton of products. It was ridiculous. Even after I stopped doing makeup on other people, I would still carry way more makeup then needed for my trips. Although, I probably still carry more than the average person, I have really learned how to down size and how to pack in the most convenient way possible. So today, I wanted to share some of the things I have learned, and reveal my best tips for traveling with all your makeup goodies!

1. Invest in a Good Quality Cosmetic Bag

My friends and I have had the tradition over the past few years of doing a Secret Santa exchange. This year I knew that I wanted something for all my beauty products that would stay safe while traveling. I have had my eye on this Henri Bendel Cosmetic Bag and was thrilled that my Secret Santa got it for me. I love that you can wipe it down completely with a wipe to keep it clean!

2. Only Pack Your Holy Grail Products

One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that you should only bring the products that you know will never fail you. Traveling really is not the best time to experiment with new products. You don’t need multiple blushes, bronzers, or highlighters. Just bring what you know works well for you.

3. Tape Down Eye Shadow Palettes

If I am especially nervous about a palette breaking during a trip, I will actually tape it together or wrap it up in a scarf or something padded to prevent the shadows from crushing.

4. Carry Your Makeup with You

If you are able to, I suggest brining your makeup on the plane or in the car with you. Makeup is expensive, and the last thing you want is for it to get lost or broken on the way.

5. Use Your Sephora Points to Get Makeup Minis

I always keep my eye out in the checkout at Sephora to see if they have any of my favorite makeup items in the mini sizes. As I talked about about in my 8 Travel Tips post, they are perfect for stuffing in your purse to do your makeup on the go.

6. Use Zip Lock Bags for Your Makeup Brushes

I have also packed my makeup brushes in the large zip lock bags. Although it definitely isn’t as glamorous as some other options, It does help if you start to run out of space in your suit case.
