How to Make a Cheap Dress Look Expensive

It can be hard to not feel a pressure to wear luxurious clothing all the time when you work in fashion. But thankfully I have developed a few tricks over the course of time that have helped me to make even a budget friendly outfit look more expensive. Knowledge is power. My biggest tip in making an outfit appear more high end is to know your designers.

Even if you are not planning on ever purchasing a big ticket item, you can easily mimic some of their classic designs if you know what you are looking for. Take this Target handbag for example. This structure mimics a very pricey designer bag from Marc Cross. I instantly thought of that design when I passed it at Target. This is a great way to to incorporate trending items without worrying if you are spending too much on an item that might be “out of style” next year.

Almost every item that I am wearing in this outfit is under $30 except the belt. But you assume that the whole outfit is luxe because of that one accessory. If you are looking to start upgrading a few key items in your wardrobe, I definitely recommend this simple trick. Designer accessories like scarfs and belts are a more affordable way to incorporate designer items into your closet. Plus, if you take good care of it, it will last forever.

So hit the books. Okay that might be asking too much. But exposure yourself to those higher brands, even if it is just to grab a budget friendly copy cat version. You don’t have to spend a fortune to look chic.
