How I Pack for a Trip

April 21, 2016

How I Pack for a TripI love going out of town. I am one of those strange freaks who actually enjoys the process of packing. If I am especially excited for a trip, then I will actually start packing several days in advance and begin to pull together some of the items I will be taking with me. This also ensures that I am less likely to forget the important pieces.

This weekend I am heading to Virginia for a wedding, where I will be reunited with all my college friends. Weddings are wonderful events to attend, especially if you are just a guest! Besides the wedding day itself, I also have a bachelorette party and a baby shower to attend! So that means I have to pack carefully in order to be prepared for all the events!

So today I thought I would share a few secrets on how I prepare for a trip!

1. Calculate Events Not Days

Instead of counting the number of days in a trip and packing the equal amount of clothing, I prefer to calculate the different events in a particular day and the clothing that will work best for those events.  For example, the day of the bachelorette I will be traveling but I will also have to change into a black dress for the evenings events. So that means on Thursday I need a travel outfit, little black dress, and something to sleep in. Count how many outfits you will need each day and begin to choose the pieces you will want to bring.

2. Lay Out the Clothing for Each Day

Once you know how many events you have going on each day of the trip, then you should begin to pull items from your closet and lay them on the bed according to the day of the trip. You can use post it notes to organize each day’s outfit choices.

3. Accessorize Each Outfit Separately

Once I know what I am wearing each day and have laid it out on the bed, I begin to pull shoes, handbags, jewelry, and even lipsticks that will go with each outfit. Once you have the outfit and accessories laid out, you can either take a picture of the ensemble or write a list of the items that go with each outfit. You can even get plastic baggies and put your jewelry and lipsticks with a post it note on which day you are suppose to wear it.

4. Consolidate Beauty Products

I used to be that girl that practically brought her entire makeup collection on a trip. But over the years I have realized that I never need to have that much makeup with me! Pick and chose your favorite products that you know will work. This is not the time to experiment with new products. Instead of purchasing minis of all your favorite hair and skin products, get little clear containers that you can just transfer the product into temporarily.

5. Collect In Flight Essentials

Once I have my suitcase packed, I like to gather all of my in flight essentials and put them in one place. This might include a few books, motion sickness medicine, neck pillow, eye cover, etc. I will even pick out a book to listen to on my Audible App to distract me while I am in the air.
