In this video and blog post, I am breaking down 5 steps for you to find the perfect pair of jeans without even leaving your couch! I used to work as a virtual stylist for a company, and I was able to style women all lover the United States by simply sitting on my couch. I was able to find them their best fitting denim from half way across the country. So I thought, why don’t I put the power in YOUR hands, and teach you how you can do the same for yourself. Follow these simple 5 steps to picking the best fitting pair of denim of your life!
1. Determine Your Body Type
We all have beautiful and unique shapes. And there are certain denim types that are more flattering on certain body types. The first step in this process is to get NAKED! Look at yourself thoroughly in the mirror and try to pick a general body type category. You may be more than one, but try to get a general shape idea for yourself. You can watch the video for a more in-depth description of each body shape.
2. Pick a Jean Silhouette
After you know your body shape, you want to choose a jean silhouette that will be the most flattering for your figure. I broke down some styles for each shape in the video, but you can also look this information up online as well.
3. Determine Your Rise
There are three different rises to jeans: low rise, mid rise and high rise. Low rise is best for my rectangle or inverted triangle shapes. They also look great on my tall ladies. Petite figures should shy away from them as they will cut your body in half and make you look shorter. Mid rise is universally flattering for all shapes and a great option if you are unsure what to start with. This is also the only rise I would recommend for apple figures. High rise is great for shapes who want to emphasize their smaller waist, such as pear and hourglass figures.
4. Measure Your Inseam
This is the secret sauce to the blog post and video. If you take the time to measure your inseam, you will be able to tell if a certain jean will fit you in the length without even trying them on! An inseam measurement is the length from your crotch to your ankle. Or if it is a flare jean, it would be to the end of the flare. The following is an inseam guide with the recommended measurements for your height.
Inseam Guide
5′-5’3 |25-27 inches |
5’4-5’5 |27-28 inches|
5’6-5’7 |30-32 inches|
5’8-5’10+ |33-34+inches|
*For bootcut and flare styles- add another 3 inches or so.

5. Pick a Fabric Blend
For curvier ladies, I recommend finding a denim fabric that contains a spandex blend. The higher percentage of spandex, the higher the stretch. If it says 100% cotton for example, there will be no stretch or give to the jean at all. Overtime, it will form to your body, but it will not give and move the same way a stretch jean will.
I hope that these tips will make online shopping for denim more pleasant and be sure to subscribe to my channel if you haven’t already! Thanks so much for reading.
