It is no secret that fashion has a way of repeating itself. How many of us have laughed at our parents’ choice of clothing, just to see the trend make a big comeback sometime later. My own mother was that effortlessly chic 90s mom. I remember looking through photos as a child with her basic crew neck t shirts, white sneakers, and her solid color straight leg high rise denim.
We are living in a fabulous time for denim right now. Almost every single style is fair game and retro styles are particularly on trend. The “mom” jean is not a new trend, but it seems to be having a big moment right now. I honestly wrote the trend off a while ago thinking it wouldn’t be flattering on my small frame. But with a few tips and tricks, I was able to find a pair that works and you can too!
What is a Mom Jean?
A “mom” jean resembles the denim style that was popular in the 90s. Think of Rachel Green in Friends in the early seasons! They are a solid wash with no distressing, fading or embellishment. The rise is high and the denim is usually more structured without the stretch we often find in skinny jeans. And the ankle is usually cropped or cuffed.
How to Find a Flattering Fit
The biggest thing to keep in mind is the waist fit. High rise is definitely preferred. But if you are concerned about the belly area, a mid rise would be okay as well. You really want the style to be fitted in the waist. Try to avoid gapping by choosing a contoured waist style. The leg area should be structured but slightly relaxed. This is not a boyfriend style. The leg is straight, but should still show the shape of your upper leg. As for the wash, a medium or darker blue wash is better for curvier ladies. A light wash is great for petite or slender ladies. But PLEASE do not take this rule as sacred. Just wear what you are comfortable in. If you are a curved lady and love light wash denim, do you girl!
