This look has Blair Waldorf written all over it. I can hear Gossip Girl’s mischievous voice saying something along the lines of, “Careful B, too many macaroons will make you more fat than French.”
Did anyone else binge on Gossip Girl back in the day? Blair’s character was a wealthy New York City girl whose mother was a fashion designer. Her entire style throughout the seasons was heavily based off French fashion. She routinely binged on macaroons and champagne while dreaming Audrey Hepburn movies on occasion. One thing Blair taught us is that you don’t have to live in France to develop a French sense of living.
Even Jackie Kennedy, our former First Lady, was inspired by their exquisite clothing art. Many women have displayed iconic styles, such as Brigette Bardot, who make being a French girl extremely sought after. So sure, we may not have a view of the glamorous Eiffel Tower out our window, but we can live in a way that brings a sense of luxe to our sometimes chaotic and overwhelming schedule.
1. Indulge, But in Moderation
This might sound like an oxymoron, but haven’t you ever wondered how the French have so many delicious looking pastries and treats but they are not obese? I think a huge reason is that their food is made with less sugar and better ingredients. But they also know how to taste and experience food without binging. We eat one donut, and then eat the entire box. Where as the French may eat a few bits and be satisfied. Learn to cut back on your portion sizing and enjoy.
2. Get Dressed Everyday
Yes, obviously you have to wear clothing on a daily basis. But I mean put thought and intention into your outfit in the mornings even when you are tired and lazy. This doesn’t mean you have to wear dresses and heels everyday. French girls have mastered effortless style with their stripped t shirts and chic cigarette pants.
3. Invest in Your Clothing
Investing in quality pieces is a no brainer for the french woman. It is not uncommon to find a Chanel blazer hanging in her closet. Now I am by no means telling you to drop over a thousand dollars on a blazer. But keep a list of staple pieces that your wardrobe is missing and when you come across it while shopping look at the fabric and determine if it is a quality piece worth investing in.
4. Wear More Neutrals
Because they believe in investing in their wardrobe, you won’t find a huge array of trendy brightly colored clothing. If they are going to spend money on their clothes, they want to make sure it will be pieces that can wear over and over again for years to come.
5. Simplify Your Makeup
French woman have a way of looking like they woke up gorgeous without much effort. Their makeup is natural with neutral colors and shades. They enhance their God given features without the dramatic colored eye shadow or purple lipstick.
6. Make Time for Leisure
Relaxation and pleasure is something they take very seriously in France. They believe that if you take time for self care, that you will better give to your work and loved ones. Make coffee shops a usual spot for you to sit and reflect without plans daunting over you.
Do you ever swoon over Parisian sights and French fashion? If I could live anywhere, I would most definitely be on a plane to Paris ASAP. Would you incorporate any of these tips to be more like a chic french girl?
Au Revoir!
