Top: Prettier, Similar | Jeans: Here | Shoes: Here | Bag: Here | Lipstick: Estee Lauder Powerful
Sometimes I imagine myself sporting a giant pink tulle skirt and walking the streets on Manhattan in a very Carrie Bradshaw kind of way. If I know one thing about this lovely fictional character, it is that she wasn’t afraid to pull off any look! Sequins and converse or a crazy headpiece, she could own any look she wore.
Although I might play silly moments like that in my head, I know that it is a lot more difficult to find the courage to actually be adventurous in our outfit choices. We have a tendency to doubt ourselves. “Does this pattern go with these shoes?” “Can I really pull off hot pink?” Instead of owning our fashion choices, we ask way too many questions.
So how can we put an outfit together in a way that will make us feel beautiful and confident? I believe that the key to confidence is knowledge. Think about it, when you have taken the time to prepare for an interview, don’t you feel so much more confident? Or if you forgot to study for an important exam, are you going to be a lot more nervous and scared? The key to fashion confidence is to do your research! But look no further! Today I am sharing with you my step by step process of pulling an outfit together head to toe!
Step One: Find Your Focal Piece
The first thing I do when trying to pull together an outfit for a blog post or my weekend style is find my focal piece. What I mean is that I find the item that I am most excited about wearing. And then I create the entire outfit around that piece. In this post, I knew first and foremost that I was going to wear this mint green top.
Step Two: Find It’s Mate
If your focal piece is a dress, than you can skip this part. But if you chose a top for example, the next step is to find a bottom that will compliment your focal piece. You need to find your focal piece a mate! With this outfit, I decided white jeans would make the mint top pop.
Step 3: Pick Your Shoes and Bag
Once your body is clothed, you can now choose a shoe that will either make your outfit pop or compliment it. In this post, I wanted the top to be the focal point. So I decided to go neutral with my bag and shoes. I didn’t want them to take away from the top.
Step 4: Add the Details
Adding details is essential to looking put together head to toe. This is when you add jewelry and makeup. Because everything in this outfit was neutral except for the top, I knew I wanted to play it up with the details. So I chose a bright lip and fun earrings to make the look a little more dynamic.
Every outfit creation is going to be different. But I find it is easiest when you decide on a hero piece and then go from there. Instead of thinking of all the details all at once, let is come to you slowly, piece by piece. What are some of your favorite tips and tricks when creating an outfit?
