What I’m Wearing
Denim is something that almost every single one of us couldn’t live without. Even if you are a dress lover, a great pair of jeans is necessity. I have recently fallen back in love with jeans because I FINALLY figured out all of the tricks on how to find the perfect pair for my body shape. With these tips, I guarantee even my dress lover with become denim wearers again too!
I have spent HOURS researching what denim is the most flattering for each body type. And when I was doing more styling in person, it was something that we were trained on briefly. But women everywhere STRUGGLE to find the most ideal pair for their unique shape. I hope that these tips can ease this sometimes frustrating experience and make finding your perfect denim fit a little more attainable.
Quick Note: During my research I saw that the most common body types were categorized as the following: hourglass, pear, apple, straight, inverted triangle, petite, and tall. Please note that you may be more than one. For example, you might be a petite pear (like me) or tall and straight. So that means when shopping for denim, you need to consider the tips from each category. Let’s jump in!
Hourglass
By definition, an hourglass has a proportional body shape. Your shoulders and hips are the same length and you have small waist. The biggest denim complication is waist gaping. To solve this problem, you need to look for styles that have a contoured waist. Mid rise and high rise will flatter your small waist. As for the silhouette, you can pretty much wear it all as your body is already proportionate. Styles with stretch are a must for your curvier figure.
Pear
Pear shapes have more narrow shoulders than their hips. They carry most of their weight on their lower half. The goal is to balance the curvier thighs. Relaxed mom fits, bootcut, and kick flares will create a balancing effect of the legs. Avoid silhouettes that have really tapered styles. Super skinny jeans or really straight tapered styles can make the leg appear stumpy. Darker washes will have a sliming effect. As for the rise, mid and high rises will flatter your smaller waist line.
Apple
Apple shapes carry their weight in their tummy, and usually have slimmer legs. If you want to show off your slimmer legs, go for a pair of straight leg jeans. Avoid super skinny styles as it can reveal an imbalance. If you are looking to create proportion, opt for silhouettes with volume or relaxed fits such as a boyfriend jean, flare jean, bootcut. Allow some room in the waist line and avoid contoured styles. Avoid low and high rise jeans. Mid rise will be your best friend.
Inverted triangle
Your shoulders are wider than your hips and you usually have slimmer legs. Create a balanced look by creating some volume in your bottom half. Boyfriend, relaxed fits, flare jeans, wide leg styles are super flattering. Create the illusion of wider hips with side pocket detailing if desired. Low rise jeans are also flattering for your body type. Lighter colored jeans will also create the illustration of more curves.
Straight
Usually described as an “athletic” or rectangle shape, you can wear a wide variety of styles. The biggest tip is to create the illusion of a waist. You can do this with a contoured waist band and a low rise jean. If you are short waisted, a low rise will make you look taller. Avoid high rises. If you are thin, you may want to avoid super skinny or tapered straight styles. Relaxed straight leg styles, boyfriend jeans, and flared styles will give more volume to the leg. Careful to not go “too baggy” as to overwhelm your frame.
Tall
If you are tall, you will want to follow the other recommendations for your body type. If you want to decrease attention to your tall frame, avoid high rise denim. Or if you want “legs for days,” by all means throw them on! Cropped styles also look great on you.
Petite
The length of the jean is the MOST important factor to keep in mind. A slightly exposed ankle with a cropped length creates the appearance of longer legs. Avoid bunching in the length at the ankles as it will make you appear stumpy. Avoid strappy ankle shoes as they cut off the leg. Low rise jeans are a “no” as they make hips look wider and your legs appear shorter.
