Ever since I was young, I was intrigued by the French culture. I dreamed of visiting Paris and visiting the Eiffel Tower long before I understood what luxury was. I was finally able to make that dream a reality when studying abroad and visiting the memorable city. There is a reason why so many of us look to the French for a more positive and leisurely way of living. Something about their culture is contagious. As a lover of all things Parisian, I thought it would be fun to round up 8 French practices that you can adapt into your everyday lifestyle.
1.Wear More Tweed
The classic Chanel jacket mades it’s debut back in 1954. So it doesn’t get more classic than a well made tweed jacket. Now I definitely don’t have the money to throw down for a Chanel, but I know there are many jackets that resemble that iconic style for a lower price point.
2. Take Care of Your Skin
There is a reason why Parisian skin care is lustfully sought after. French women know how to take care of their skin. But treating your complexion right doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. Simply drinking a lot more water, removing your makeup nighty, and moisturizing your skin will go a long way.
3. Find a Signature Scent and Drench Yourself in It
“Parfume is serious, almost religious, in France, where some of the world’s most memorable fragrances- Chanel, Hermès, Guerlain, to mention a few-are created.” Catherine Malandrino
4. Make Time for Leisure
Americans can get so wrapped up in the chaotic go, go, go of everyday life. But making time for leisure can do wonderful things for our mental health. Even as I sit and write this blog post, I am outside on my balcony, watching the sunset and drinking a class of rosé. Enjoy the little things.
5. Ask What People Like to Do Instead of What They Do for a Living
Our first question that we ask a new acquaintance is “what do you do for a living.” We place so much value into our careers and jobs. But the French appreciate conversations about art, history, and politics. Their talk is deep and intoxicating. Explore more diverse forms of communication with those around you.
6. Don’t Diet, But Eat Less
The book French Woman Don’t Get Fat, discusses how the French eat for pleasure in a way that involves balance and discipline. I haven’t read it, but I am interested in its content.
7. Flirt with Everyone
“Catching an eye of a stranger can be a moment of pleasure that lights up a dull day, a reminder that human attraction is magnetic.” Catherine Malandrino
8. Make Your Morning Coffee Routine More Glamorous
Essentially what this means is to enjoy the small moments. Most of us take pleasure in our morning coffee. So why not enhance the experience by purchasing a special mug and enjoying it with a good book and the sunshine. Set your day with intention and pleasure.
