Fashion is a way of telling the world who we are before we even speak a word. All of us have our own personal flare when it comes to dressing. We are naturally drawn to different colors and textures and feel comfortable in different clothing types. But have you ever wanted to narrow in on what your personal style really is? Today, I wanted to break down a few key steps in how you can determine what it is you really like and how to bring it about in your own personal wardrobe!
1. Brainless Pinning
First, you want to start out with some inspiration. You can either create a physical vision board and cut out images from magazines. Or I like to use Pinterest. What you will do is simply pin pictures of outfits or clothing that you like onto a secret board. DO NOT overthink this. We will refine this step later. But just spend some time mindlessly pinning some fashion pictures you like.
2. Determine a Common Theme
After you have spent some time gathering image you like, go through and determine a common theme. What is the overall vibe? Are there images with similar silhouettes, color palettes, fabrics, or prints? Write down the traits you see that repeat themselves. For example, my common themes are feminine, floral, dresses, vintage, smocking, eyelet, etc. Make a little list to remember the details that you found as a reoccurring trait.
3. Narrow In on Inspiration
Now that you have a relative idea on the styles you like, you want to really narrow in on getting some inspiration. Go back on Pinterest, and type those key words into the search. This will give you outfit ideas that are more tailored to your general likes. Spend some time pinning new images on your secret board. And go ahead and delete any pins that you pinned at first, but no longer fit your general look.
4. Find a Muse
After you have your inspiration board laid out and ready, now is a good time to find a few icons that fit your new idea of style. Search hashtags on Instagram that match the keywords that you described earlier. You can also find celebrities or Influencers that match your style likes and get some inspiration off of them as well.
5. Start Picking Some Items
Now for the fun part! Start playing dress up. Look for outfits in your own closet that match the words and images you found. See if you can create looks that define this new personal style. You can also create an online shopping cart and put items into the cart that you like that match this style. I also recommend heading to some physical stores as well to try on items and see if you actually love the items you pinned on Pinterest. This is the part of the process that will really help you determine if this style is really YOU.
6. Refine, Refine, Refine!
Did you decide the images you pinned really are not you? That is OKAY! Back the drawing board. The key is to find a look that really represents YOU. No one else. It is a great thing to draw inspiration from Pinterest and Instagram. But at the end of the day, you need to wear what makes you the most comfortable. Take your time with this process. This can take a very long time to fine tune. But do not stress yourself out. Enjoy the journey.
What would you say your personal style is? I would love to read how you describe it!
Thanks so much for reading.
