With so much to do in so little time, I feel like I am constantly in a race against the clock. It is almost as if any second my timer will run out. I think we often feel like our lives are so busy that we are rushing through the day to accomplish our never ending to do lists. Do you ever feel like you are stuck in the world between being unmotivated and exhausted but wanting to be productive and engaged? Today for example, I was highly energized  and efficient while I was at work. But the second I came home, I felt completely unmotivated and tired. Yes of course some of that is the fact that I am 37 weeks pregnant and everything takes a little extra energy. But I also think that we all could be a little more productive even when we are battling a lack of motivation.

I definitely do not hold all the answers to mastering productivity. Staying on one particular task is one of my biggest struggles. As ideas or tasks pop into my head, I feel an overwhelming urge to attend to them immediately. It has taken a lot of mental training and self control to finish a task at hand before moving onto another. I have even had the urge to get up and go clean the kitchen in the middle of writing this blog post! But there are a few tips I have adapted when trying to be productive when I am lacking motivation and energy.

1. Just Get Up

We all get trapped in the vortex that is Netflix. It can feel like giving up the one ring of power just to get up off the couch. But something that I have noticed is that lounging on the couch or bed often makes us feel more tired than we actually are. The second I just get up and start moving, I realize that I still do have a little left to give. Just give yourself one task that will make you get up. Then I bet once you are rolling, you will accomplish a few other tasks as well.

2. Set a Timer or Deadline

When I am really struggling to find the desire to start a task, I will give myself a specific start or end time. This can be particularly helpful if you have a habit of getting sucked into social media. For example, tell yourself that at 7:00pm you have to get off Pinterest and do that load of laundry. Setting a timer can really help you begin a daunting task.

3. Reward Yourself With Your Distractions

During the middle of a project we are often met with our favorite distractions. Maybe it is that Instagram notification, retweet, or even snacks lingering in our refrigerator. Instead of allowing that distraction to take over the current task and sucking you into it’s trap, reward yourself at the end of your task by giving into the activity. Finished your college paper? Okay great, now you get to binge watch those Friends episodes!

When all struggle with balance. And to be honest, we have a habit of taking on a little too much. We allow our schedule to get overbooked and out of hand. Remember to ask yourself if your commitments really are necessary. It is okay to take a step back from a few obligations if you feel like you are beginning to sacrifice your quality of life. Productivity is crucial. But don’t forget to step back and remember what is truly important.

Thanks for reading! Stop back soon.
