Anxiety is a touchy subject. People often think that those who have it are dramatic and overly worried. Or there are those who are silently suffering afraid to talk about their issues because they are afraid they won’t be understood. Writing this post is hard because it has been something that I have struggled with since high school and there are many unpleasant memories associated with the times where anxiety has entrapped me in its game.

I could discuss at length all of the ways in which anxiety has affected my life. At times even causing me physical pain every day. But I honestly don’t see the point in glorifying those memories. That is not the point of this blog post. The joy is in the victory. And how patience plays a great role in defeating this monster. Today I want to share ways that you can learn to deal with anxiety in those difficult moments.

For me anxiety comes in waves. There are periods in my life where it seems it is gone for good, never to return. But then it returns and then it feels like it will never leave. I think that the reason that this happens is because we lose trust. When are trusting in God’s will and plan for us in our lives we are less likely to fall into the trap of anxiety. When it feels that the world is closing in on us, we begin to loose sight of hope in the distance. This where patience is the cure.

Patience is not simply waiting for something to happen. It is living moment to moment, trusting in the future without worry. When we are patient to see an outcome unfold, we are less likely to waste our precious time playing out all the possible scenarios. When we let trust and patience hold hands in our life, we are able to free ourselves from the burdens that swirl around our head.

Here are just a few things that help me when anxiety strikes.

1. Prayer

I won’t go into detail here. But prayer helps everything. I especially love the Jesus Calling book for a more guided reflection.

2. Gratitude

I wil be honest and say I do not write in this journal enough. But when I make time to list and reflect on the things that I am grateful for, I am more peaceful and at ease.

3. Eating Frequently

This might seem weird, but anxiety can be amplified when you are hungry. I have noticed this with myself. If you struggle with anxiety on a regular basis, then I suggest carrying snacks around with you. Try to eat every few hours. I also try to have a snack before bed because when you hit the pillow, your mind can run wild.

4. Exercise

This cannot be ignored. Getting out and experiencing nature, while moving your body can do wonders. Cardio will get your endorphins going and make you feeling happier and more peaceful.

5. Journaling or Listing

Getting our thoughts onto paper can help relieve a load we didn’t even realize we were carrying. Clear your mind by emptying your thoughts onto paper.

Anxiety is not an easy battle to overcome. But why fight when you don’t have to? Give your burdens and worries to God and allow Him to fight for you. Your future was so intricately designed by Him the moment you were formed. Why waste so much of it trapped in anxiety?

I know it isn’t easy. I know it doesn’t go away over night. But trust and have patience and the road will get so much easier.

Thanks for stopping by.

I agree with this! Reading the Bible helps with my anxiety. Changing my eating habits and exercising regularly definitely helped as well.
