7 Things I Learned at Makeup School

Attending makeup school was one of the best experiences of my life. Everyday felt like an exciting new adventure as I took the train into New York City for class to be surrounded by other bright eyed girls who also loved making people feel beautiful. It was almost like one giant sleepover with a bunch of girls playing makeup and sharing their tips and tricks. Fun Fact: The instructor of the class is actually the creator of those makeup bags you see in Sephora that say “I would cry, but my mascara is designer!”I learned so much from makeup school. Not only how to transform a face into a better version of itself but also about history and the art of the human body. Today I thought I would share with you some of the tips and tricks I picked up from school!1. Egypt Started It All

The earliest record of makeup comes from the first Dynasty of Egypt. Even then ladies were desperate to do anything and everything to look hot! They even put kohl (soot) on their eyes to darken their lashes and eyelids!

2.Cream Products are Always More Natural Looking

Whether you want a pop of blush, a contour, or highlighted cheekbones, using cream products will always give a more natural looking appearance. Powders can sometimes look heavy or even cakey if applied liberally. Opt for cream products when you want a natural look.

3. You Should Have Two Concealers 

The first step in combating under eye circles is to use a peach toned color corrector. Apply this only on the areas that appear to have darkness. Then your second concealer should be either the same color as your skin or a shade lighter. This should be applied in the shape of an upside down triangle.

4. Yellow Works Better Than Green for Acne Marks

You have probably seen marketing for green concealers to correct redness in the skin. Although it is true that green cancels red on the color wheel, yellow toned concealers will work just as well to correct redness in the skin!

5. Symmetry is Very Important with Eye Shadow  

I remember that our instructor was always walking around the room to ensure that both eyes were symmetrical. Especially if you were doing a bride, it was key that both eyes matched perfectly for the photos. For us everyday gals, it is still important to make sure we are matching both eyes as best we can!

6. Know your Eye Shape

Before makeup school, I loved doing winged eye liner. But come to find out, it is not the most flattering look for my deep set eyes. Take time to learn the best way to apply eye shadow for your eye shape!

7. Eyebrows Change Your Face

When I look back at old pictures of my eyebrows, I want to cry! Shape matters. Defining your arch is important. But be careful not to over pluck! Also structured brows are not for everyone. Although you might see intensely arched brows on Instagram, it is not always as flattering in real life.

The best advice I can give with makeup is to know yourself. So many of the trends and dramatic looks on Instagram might look really exciting and appealing. But the truth is it might not look as good on you! Get to know your face by understanding your eye shape, face shape, skin undertones, and favorite features. Play up your best features and conceal those small details that might make you insecure. You are beautiful! Take some time to learn what makeup looks are best for you!
