How to Achieve Flawless Looking Foundation

Flawless Foundation Application

Flawless looking skin is an envied trait that pretty much every woman on the planet desires. We spend endless amounts of cash on skin care products and have a whole stash of foundations that we no longer use because they just lacked that “wow” factor we were expecting.

“Your makeup can only look as good as your skin underneath.” I have heard that phrase so many times in my adult life, and quite frankly, I despise that saying. Although there is obviously truth to it, there are also factors about our skin that are out of our control! No woman chooses to have blotchy or dry skin. No woman wakes up in the morning and says, “I really wanted a new pimple to show up this morning!”

So when your skin is less than perfect, what do you turn to that takes all your worries and cares away? Foundation of course! With makeup school and beauty blogging, I have tried countless foundations and application techniques. So today, I thought I would share a few of my favorite tips and tricks on achieving flawless foundation! Keep scrolling to see the tips!

1. Hydrate your skin 10 to 15 minute prior to application

Moisturized skin will definately improve the appearance of your foundation. But if you apply it too quickly after you skincare, than your foundation can slip and slide. Waiting 10-15 after you apply your skin care to do your makeup application will allow your moisturizer to set into the skin.

2. Use a primer that contain similar ingredients to your foundation

I have a blog post all about combining your primers + foundations. You need to use a silicone based primer with a silicone based foundation, and water- based with water- based. If you use the wrong type of primer with your foundation, it can make your foundation break up throughout the day.

3. Choose a foundation for your skin type

Using a matte foundation on dry skin or a hydrating foundation with oily skin is a recipe for  disaster! If you have dry skin, you need to look for foundations that are hydrating. If you have oily or acne prone skin than you should look for oil-free or matte finish foundations. If you are combination skin, like me, than choose one that you think would work best. I prefer a satin finish foundation or hydrating foundation because I find the matte finishes to be slightly unflattering on my skin.

4. Apply with a beauty blender.

I have become such a huge fan of applying my foundation with the beauty blender sponge. I have also done a blog post comparing the beauty blender to the flat top kabuki brush. You can read that for more details about the sponge, but I just love the way it really blends the product into the skin.

5. Set with a loose translucent powder.

For the longest time I was so nervous to set my face with the powder because I wasn’t oily. But once I started applying a loose layer of powder, I noticed that my foundation was looking more flawless and even. Laura Mercier Loose Translucent Setting Powder is my favorite for this step.

Those are my steps for a flawless looking face! What is your favorite foundation?
